Single corrugated cartons are a popular packaging material for light goods: Because if the folding carton is 1 corrugated, it is particularly inexpensive

Products need protection against damage, moisture, shocks, temperature fluctuations and pressure for storage, shipping and transport. They are packaged for this purpose, for which there are various packaging materials. Probably the best known is the foldable shipping carton. It has a high stability and resistance to separate goods into shipping units and transport them safely from one place to another. As a rule, a single-flute box is made of solid or corrugated cardboard and is erected by hand. A distinction is made between single and double wall cartons. If there is a single flute of corrugated board between the carton walls, the folding carton is single wall. There are different types of single flute cardboard boxes, which are completely adapted to the needs of storage and shipping: With us, every, single corrugated carton is delivered ready for use and in various sizes and designs.

What are single wall cartons made of and how are they manufactured?

Single corrugated cartons are mostly made of corrugated board and have bottom and top flaps. These are joined together either by a wire stitching, an adhesive strip, a strapping band or a flap gluing and thus enable flexible use. As a lightweight material, paper is ideally suited to the production of 1 corrugated cardboard packaging if it is fluted or corrugated. The process of paper pressing creates corrugated board as an extraordinarily strong product of paper processing, with at least one layer of smooth and corrugated paper webs on top of each other.

The smooth paper web in each case is called the cover paper and forms the skin for the outer protection of the shipping packaging against possible damage. Depending on how many webs are on top of each other, the stackability increases, which is a decisive criterion for pallets and storage. The shipping carton is assembled and can either be locked by the lid and bottom flaps or can be additionally secured with adhesive tape. Before a shipping carton is used, it is initially still folded flat on delivery and can be stacked and stored in several variations to save space. It is used both as the main packaging and as outer packaging.

The many properties of the folding carton for safe transport and better storage

A high-quality shipping carton has properties that support and facilitate transport and storage. Single corrugated cartons can also be stacked. The prerequisite is that the single wall folding carton is easy to fold and already has a side seam glued at the factory. At the same time, the folding carton single wall is excellent to choose according to your own needs to ensure the highest level of security. Due to the material, folding cartons have a natural cushioning function and can thus adapt perfectly to the products inside. They are environmentally friendly, made from up to 80 per cent recycled paper and can be purchased in plain or printed versions.

The folding box protects the packaged goods from external influences

The folding box protects the packaged goods all around from impacts, damage, moisture and dirt. This protects it from external influences during transport and storage. For many companies that frequently store and ship goods, the efficiency of the cardboard box is crucial and that the folding box 1 corrugated allows packaging quickly and easily. In general, the heavier the packaged goods, the more stable the shipping packaging should be. Pointed and sharp edges must also be taken into account.

Whether 1-wall or multi-wall: the FEFCO standard guarantees the high quality of shipping cartons.

The maximum load capacity is important for safe transport, as is whether the shipping carton is made of single wall, double wall or triple wall corrugated board, each of which has different strengths and different load capacities. The FEFCO standard is used to designate the construction of shipping cartons made of corrugated and solid board. FEFCO (Fédération Européenne des Fabriccants de Carton Ondulé) is the worldwide valid designation for the exact specification of a 1 flute carton.

If cartons are 1 flute, they have FEFCO code 02 and FEFCO code 07 and are suitable for shipping and storage. The latter are flash bottom or automatic bottom cartons and allow quicker unfolding with a flick of the wrist. Alternatively, there is the classic carton 1 corrugated according to FEFCO 0201, which is a combination of automatic bottom and additional handles or as a shipping carton with lid. Another variant is the FEFCO 0203 shipping carton, which has overlapping base and lid flaps. Only adhesive tape is then needed to seal it.

All in all, the FEFCO code is divided into several basic types of cardboard boxes, which are internationally valid and indicate the type of packaged goods with digits, while folding boxes and boxes consisting of one piece of corrugated cardboard are identified with the code 02. There are also lidded and telescope cartons, folding sleeves and trays, sliding cartons, form-fitting cartons and ready-glued cartons, whereby 1 corrugated cartons with automatic base belong to these and are shown with the code 07.

Practical features that make shipping easy for both sender and recipient

The features of the 1 corrugated boxes determine how easily and quickly they can be shipped. Variants with an automatic bottom are excellent, while the use of an adhesive tape becomes unnecessary if the packaging has a tear strip, as is the case with small cartons and mailing bags. The recipient can then open the packaging used for shipping without much trouble via the thread with a flick of the wrist.

Alternatively, there are return and self-adhesive seals. Both serve to make it easier to seal the mono-corrugated shipping box, as the adhesive strip is attached directly to the packaging and protected by the cover paper. With a return closure, resealing is easier because there is an additional self-adhesive seal. Modern advancements are models with height grooves, which allow the packaged goods to be used at several heights by having pre-cut grooves and folding them over at the desired height.

When is a single corrugated carton? An overview of the different types

Shipping cartons 1 corrugated come in different sizes and dimensions. A special feature is the type of corrugation, which ensures high stability. Here, common shapes are distinguished as A-, C-, B- and E-flute, which determine the structure as coarse, medium, fine and ultra-fine flute. While the A flute has excellent spring effects due to its coarse structure, the C flute is versatile, the B flute is suitable for sensitive packaged goods and the E flute is ideal for imprinting, e.g. a company logo. The most common in Germany is the sine wave with round corrugation. The standard for all types of flutes is DIN 55 468.

If the flute inside the cardboard is covered on two sides with smooth paper webs, it is single flute corrugated board. The folding box 1 flute is excellent for storage and for lighter transport goods. Here, the material consists of a layer with cover paper and corrugation on the inside. The cardboard thickness protects against pressure and pressure shock forces from inside and outside. The shipping folding carton is available in lengths from 100 mm, from 200 mm, from 300 mm, from 400 mm, from 500 mm and from 600 mm. The quality designation ranges from 1.1 to 1.4. The first digit indicates the number of corrugations, the second digit the load capacity of 1 corrugated shipping carton in kilograms.

Two corrugations increase impact resistance and stability and have different corrugation heights and corrugation pitches. The latter is the horizontal distance between the flutes, while the height determines the vertical dimension from flute apex to flute apex. Double flute folding cartons are designed for medium and high transport loads and have a layer of two plies of corrugated board. This increases the load capacity and load-bearing capacity, which is also marked with two digits on the cardboard boxes, e.g. 2.20. The first digit designates the double-flute version, the second digit the load-bearing capacity of up to 20 kilograms. The quality designation ranges from 2.2 to 2.95.

In the case of the triple-wall shipping carton, there are three corrugated layers on top of each other, which are surrounded by cover paper and have a higher corrugation height. This provides stability, shock resistance and cushioning at the same time. In some cases, the load capacity exceeds that of the other two, so that this variant is used as heavy-duty corrugated board, which is suitable for very high transport demands. The material provides high edge crush resistance and high puncture resistance.

Single and multi corrugated folding cartons are used in these areas

Folding cartons 1 corrugated are a versatile solution for every need. They can be perfectly adapted to the intended use and do not take up any space when ordered in bulk, as they are delivered folded flat and are only unfolded to the required dimensions when used. It is important to tailor the type of shipping packaging to the weight and sensitivity of the packaged goods. Shipping cartons allow goods to be stored, products to be protected from external influences and prepared for shipping. Folding cartons 1 corrugated are also a good choice for packing and transporting household goods when moving house.

In addition to small folding cartons such as the single corrugated carton, which are largely used for shipping, there are oblong or square 1 corrugated cartons that have special properties. In addition to transport, folding cartons are also used for storage, sometimes for stacking several goods on top of each other. A single corrugated carton for time-saving assembly has an automatic base, while the large shipping carton also serves as a moving box. Single corrugated cartons in special formats are also popular, e.g. for shipping bottles or fragile packaged goods. Alternatively, there are modular cartons that have pallet-optimised dimensions and can be combined in a modular way.

This shows that a single corrugated carton fulfils several tasks at once. In addition to protection and stackability, a single flute carton also serves as an advertising medium or enables easier identification when shipping goods. Companies often use single corrugated cartons with a printed company logo. When shipping, the 1 flute folding carton is primarily used to transport goods such as toys, books, jewellery and smaller electrical parts, and its weight class and type can be adapted to the contents. The folding carton 1 corrugated is also a good outer and outer packaging to fix, cushion or seal products. Small folding cartons are available here, e.g. media packaging or the oblong carton 1 flute as a shipping tube.

What are the advantages of the 1 flute corrugated cardboard box compared to other packaging?

Corrugated board is one of the most stable and resilient materials and for various types of packaging, such as the popular single corrugated carton, the best prerequisite for transporting goods safely, storing them and making them stackable. Compared to other packaging, single corrugated cartons are particularly flexible, can be folded and unfolded and are available in many sizes and formats.

Even the single wall folding carton offers good stability and is suitable for shipping, storage and pallet stacking. The first variants appeared in America in the 19th century, and the technology has improved considerably over time. With lid and base, a sophisticated combination of materials is offered so that protection for the packaged goods is guaranteed and standardised.

Single corrugated cartons offer protection, space for storage, facilitate transport and are excellent for printing and as an advertising medium with a company logo. The material is always environmentally friendly, easy to dispose of and can be recycled. The extended equipment of the shipping packaging with adhesive tape or tear flap simplifies the use.

The different types of corrugated board

Corrugated board is always corrugated paper sandwiched between two paper webs, resulting in a sandwich that is highly stable and impact resistant. Different materials are used for the cover paper, which influence the robustness of the cardboard. Typical are kraftliner, schrenz and testliner, while the flute is usually made of semi-chemical pulp paper and schrenz paper.

Kraftliner: Kraftliner is the strongest paper. It consists of about 80 per cent virgin fibre material, or more precisely primary fibres, which are obtained from unprocessed wood instead of waste paper and are bonded together by a strong structure. This gives it a particularly high degree of stability. The material is excellently suited for printing folding cartons and is available with a grammage between 125 and 440 g / m2. The advantages of the material are high strength and bursting capacity, while it has good printing properties and great ring crush resistance.

Schrenz: Schrenz consists of mixed waste paper and is a very light cover paper with a grammage between 80 to 140 g/m2. It serves as an intermediate web for multiwall board and is also used for interior ceilings. The advantages of Schrenzpapier are that it is a very light and environmentally friendly material, has good printing properties, is suitable for outer packaging and is cheap to produce. Compared to kraftliner and testliner, however, it has lower strength and poorer adhesive tape properties.

Testliner: In addition to high-quality single-wall folding cartons, there are shipping packages with two or more layers of cover paper made from waste paper and corrugated board waste. The superimposed layers provide good cushioning, while the grammage is between 100 and 200 g / m2. Testliner is environmentally friendly, cheap to produce and has good strength. The bursting capacity and the post-strength are somewhat worse than with kraftliner.

What is the difference between single wall and double wall corrugated board?

Single wall corrugated board has a flute that is covered by two smooth paper webs. Double wall corrugated board often combines two different flute types, which are separated from each other by intermediate flutes. The double wall version often combines a coarse and a fine flute.

Single flute corrugated board for shipping cartons is excellent for individual shipments and for a printed postal carton. The material is cheaper than double flute corrugated board, much lighter and ideal for small goods, while double flute shipping packaging is useful for bulky goods. The folding box 1 corrugated is also suitable for pallet shipping, whereby a maximum of 4 kilograms is sufficient. This type of box can be used if the pallet stack height does not exceed 150 centimetres. For higher stacks, double wall folding cartons should be used. The same applies to a load capacity from 5 kilograms upwards.

Here's what you should know about the quality grades of single- and multiwall cartonboard

The quality of a single corrugated carton is defined by the DIN 55468 standard and determines the type of corrugation, the number of corrugations and the load capacity. Accordingly, when buying folding cardboard boxes, pay attention to the following specifications in order to recognise the quality and possible applications:

An example: a single-flute folding carton that has the specification 1.20 A is made of single-flute corrugated board, has a load capacity of 20 kilograms and is provided with an A-flute that has a coarse structure.

Decisive for reliable shipping are the load-bearing capacity of the single corrugated carton, the compression and puncture force resistance, the edge crush resistance and the correct carton thickness. The latter has an enormous influence on the load-bearing capacity of the carton. The stronger and thicker the paper, the more cushioning and stability is required. When it comes to sending particularly lightweight packaging, single-wall folding cartons are the better choice. In general, the cardboard weight, the type of corrugation and the shape of the corrugation are decisive characteristics for the quality and possible applications.

The single flute folding carton is a multifunctional all-rounder

Folding cartons are multifunctional all-rounders and can be freely selected in terms of dimensions. A special feature of folding cartons is the automatic base, which allows faster assembly, while some special models have fully overlapping base and top flaps. Folding cartons with the RESY symbol are excellent, indicating environmental protection and easy disposal.

The single wall folding carton has a light own weight and is a good choice in various lengths to be used as an advertising medium as well. Companies can have the company logo printed on the outside or select a specific motif that makes the mono corrugated shipping box unique. Printing is possible on all materials and is usually done with digital printing. This turns a single corrugated carton into an inexpensive but effective advertising medium.
