Recyclates are products of the recycling process with materials and articles consisting wholly or partly of recycled materials.

Cardboard boxes are color-coded by code number - KZ 1 for white, KZ 2 for light, and KZ 4 for brown. The KZ reference refers only to the color; the cardboard box itself can be either coated or uncoated.

The folding box as such is industrially produced in several hundred sizes and dimensions. The uniform basis by which the cardboard industry is guided is the FEFCO-ESBO code, or FEFCO for short. The International fiberboard case code defines all packaging materials made of corrugated board and solid board. Since its adoption by the International Corrugated Case Association ICCA, the code has been used worldwide.

FEFCO is short for Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondule, which translates as European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers. While the FEFCO acronym has been retained, the Brussels-based association will trade as the European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers in the early 2020s.

The FEFCO code is four-digit, with the first two digits defining the basic type of packaging material in question. FEFCO 02 stands for folding boxes or folding cartons and FEFCO 07 for folding bottom cartons as well as erecting cartons or cartons as finished glued cardboard boxes. They are provided with a self-adhesive closure and can be erected by hand. For this reason, they are technically referred to as automatic bottom or flash bottom cartons. The currently valid FEFCO-ESBO code contains approximately 200 digits for the various packaging materials.

Folding cartons and folding cartons made of solid board have always had a special status within cartonboard packaging. Against this background, a second classification is used with the ECMA code. ECMA stands for the European Carton Makers Association, founded in 1960. The ECMA code is used for standardized folding cartons and folding boxes as well as for die-cut packaging - it is the basis for the development of almost all types and shapes of folding cartons.

ECMA-A is the designation for the rectangular folding boxes with longitudinal seam gluing and ECMA-B for those without the longitudinal seam gluing. ECMA-C stands for the non-rectangular folding carton with longitudinal seam gluing and ECMA-D for the non-rectangular folding carton without longitudinal seam gluing. ECMA-E is the code for folding cartons with product integration and ECMA-F applies to all other folding cartons with closures as well as auxiliary devices. The decimal ECMA categories are divided into three parts. A10 stands for folding cartons with tuck-in closures, A2420 for those with opposing flaps and A2220 for those with offset flaps.

The different types of cardboard boxes according to FEFCO standard

Corrugated board is produced by gluing together at least one smooth and one corrugated paper web. This is the one-sided glued, one-sided or in other words single wall corrugated board. In the cardboard industry, several, in some cases up to nine, paper webs are usually used for corrugated board production. This then results in the two-flute, three-flute or even multi-flute folding carton. The decisive factor is the flute. Even lightweight paper generally gains a high degree of strength when it is corrugated and glued to a smooth paper web to form hollow volume. This then results in an extremely stable transport and packaging material as a lightweight paper construction.

Folding board consists of raw and secondary materials such as recovered paper as well as wood, cellulose and semi-cellulose. The name cardboard is derived from the Latin word pappare, which means porridge. Folding board as a cardboard material has been virtually irreplaceable for a long time. The name has its origin - also - in the word pappen as a gluing together of paper and other materials.

Single-flute, double-flute and triple-flute folding boxes are commercially available and suitable for transport. When transporting and shipping packages, pressure, moisture and impact are among the most common sources of damage and danger. The following applies here: the stronger and more stable the carton, the better the carton contents are protected.

Single wall folding cartons offer sufficient quality and stability for storage use or for the rather low stress of transport and logistics. Double wall folding cartons are suitable for medium to high transport stress. Three flute is the heavy corrugated board for all other transport demands.

Quality of corrugated board and type of corrugation are defined in a three-digit numerical code - with one digit before and two after the dot. The digit before the dot indicates the number of corrugated board layers. The two-digit number following the dot indicates the load-bearing or load-bearing capacity of the corrugated board.
