An envelope is often called a wrapper. An envelope is made of paper. Letters, documents, invoices, application forms, advertising and other documents can be sent in an envelope, which can have different sizes and formats. In view of increasing digitalization, some people wonder whether people will still send documents or letters in the future that they wrap in a paper envelope. Sending letters by post is becoming more and more expensive, but the postal services are not satisfactory. Hardly anyone among young people writes a letter. Today, correspondence is handled via email or WhatsApp messages. Any document can be scanned and sent as an email attachment. Many contracts are concluded online. Even tax returns are processed digitally.
So what significance will mailing have in the future? No one can know. Envelopes are not only used for current mailing, but also for long-term archiving of important documents. They allow papers to be stored in an organized manner without having to be folded or punched. Sometimes it can also be used as an archiving aid for important documents. Thanks to its sturdy properties and the ability to store documents without creasing or punching holes, it enables clear organization.
A special feature is the address field in the window, which allows a curious look at the contents without breaking the seal. This discreet curiosity can increase the anticipation of the mysterious. The environmental friendliness of the envelope cannot be overlooked. What types of adhesive are there?
A distinction is made between self-adhesive, wet-adhesive and pressure-sensitive envelopes and envelopes with adhesive bonding. Even if it sounds as if some of the gluing methods mentioned are identical, this is not the case. Until recently, wet gluing was the classic method of gluing envelopes. The mouth flap of an envelope has a dry but water-soluble application. This can be moistened with a moistened finger or a small sponge. It is sealed by pressing it on. Self-adhesive envelopes are coated on the mouth flap with pressure-sensitive sealing adhesive. Self-adhesive envelopes can be recognized by two adhesive films applied opposite each other. They are securely sealed by folding the flap over.
A typical feature of pressure-sensitive adhesives is that the adhesive is gummed on one side. This adheres to paper, sticks and does not require a counterpart. To ensure that the adhesive surface is protected, it is covered with an easily removable silicone strip. If you want to seal self-adhesive paper envelopes or a plastic envelope, remove the silicone strip and press the mouth flap firmly into place. Adhesive sealing was developed for items that postal workers are allowed to check. For envelopes and mailing bags containing goods and books, adhesives with a lower adhesive strength have been developed. Opened envelopes must remain undamaged. Adhesive bonds can be opened and closed several times. They still protect the contents of the envelope well. The low postage costs for book or merchandise items mean that the envelope must be marked "Bü-Wa". This reduces the postage costs.
Sustainability is a requirement nowadays. The sustainability rate for paper envelopes is quite good, as long as they are not fitted with a plastic window, self-adhesive coatings or adhesive labels. Sustainability means that goods are produced in an environmentally friendly way. They should also be fully recyclable and reusable after use. The sustainability factor is high for envelopes without a viewing window. They are disposed of in the waste paper garbage can and are fully recyclable. They are often made from recycled paper. For envelopes with a window, the window must be removed before disposal in the blue garbage can. Otherwise, the disposal or recycling company must fish the plastic out of the paper pulp and process it further. If an envelope contains adhesive labels - such as address labels or stickers - or if self-adhesive envelopes are to be disposed of, the blue garbage can is the wrong place for disposal. Adhesive can only be washed out of paper pulp during recycling under difficult conditions.
The adhesive strip on self-adhesive envelopes must be cut off and disposed of elsewhere. The same applies to address labels or self-adhesive stamps that can be found on them. From an environmental point of view, the better alternative is wet-adhesive envelopes. An envelope made from recycled paper is the most sustainable option.
What does proper labeling look like?
Are there still people these days who label envelopes incorrectly? Unfortunately, there are. Envelopes must be machine-readable. Therefore, certain rules must be observed when writing the address and affixing postage stamps. Everyone should be familiar with these. The stamp is affixed at the top right. Franking stamps are positioned in the same place. The recipient's address should appear in legible letters on the right-hand side of the envelope. The sender should be clearly visible at the top left. If the letters are the same size, the sender and recipient could potentially be confused. This leads to a return and additional postage costs.
Any additional text on an envelope is prohibited. This is generally only labeled on the front. Writing the sender's name on the back is now considered unacceptable. Machine readability suffers as a result. Environmentally conscious people do not use adhesive labels to indicate the sender's address. Neither discount stamps nor stamp-like stickers should be used on an envelope. They could be confused with the stamp. The same applies to any imprint that does not originate from a franking machine. The lettering on the address field should be left-aligned and appear closed. Large spaces between the name, street and town should be avoided. Colorful envelopes with gold, red or yellow letters hinder machine readability. The address field should be written in dark, contrasting ink or correctly typed.
Tips for making the right choice
Do you want to order an envelope? If you need to decide which type of envelope you need most often for sending or archiving, you will find corresponding offers in different designs in our range. The basic rule is that the contents and packaging must be compatible. The DIN standards help you to find the right format for mailing. A CD is handy and well protected in its plastic case. However, it still needs more protection during shipping than a reminder. If necessary, the CD can be wrapped in cardboard or bubble wrap.A dunning procedure is used to determine who should receive reminders. The reminder is sent by mass mailing. An envelope with a window is suitable for official letters. Packaging sizes, closure type and format of window envelopes can vary. The classic choice for sending letters and letter cards is the envelope without a window. Whether in a short or DIN long version, it is extremely inexpensive.
Folding envelopes for larger documents are considerably more expensive. They are ideal for archiving tax documents that must be retained. Mailing envelopes and envelopes are available in many variants, adhesions and order sizes. The C6 envelope without a window but with adhesive is one of the cheapest envelopes. It should be noted that normal envelopes do not incur any liability on the part of the post office if they are lost. It is better not to send banknotes in envelopes. Sending money by registered mail is also risky. The DIN long envelope is used with or without a window for official letters from health insurance companies or tax offices. Pay attention to the prices of envelopes with or without a window, as these can vary depending on the manufacturer. Savers can take advantage of our low graduated prices to order larger stocks of envelopes.
At verpacking.com you can buy envelopes in many different formats and order envelopes online. A paper envelope can be used in DIN C4, DIN C5, DIN C6, DIN B4, DIN B5 or DIN long C5/6 format for different uses. The envelope is also interesting because it is printable and can be ordered in different colors. The paper envelope can bear a company logo and the color can be adapted to the corporate design. Since content and format should match, format issues are relevant. The chosen envelope should match the thickness and size of the items to be sent. It must not be too tight, but must have one centimeter of space on all sides. Whether an envelope measuring 110 x 220 millimetres is sufficient or a larger one with more volume and a fold-out bottom is required depends on the items to be sent.
The specified DIN formats are important parameters when it comes to shipping packaging. The most common formats have proven to be the DIN long envelope for business letters with a maximum of five pages and DIN C6/5 or DIN Long Plus for somewhat larger business letters. Both are opaque.
The DIN size C7 is suitable for purchased and homemade greeting cards and the like. A format such as the C6 envelope is suitable for letters folded three times lengthways with a maximum of three pages. DIN size C5 only fits one side of paper folded once. Unfolded A4 sheets fit into the C4 envelope size. For small consignments with CDs and DVDs, a DIN size B6 with 125-176 millimeters is sufficient. If the selected envelope is large, it can also be used for books or application folders. This is possible with the DIN size B5. Standard letters are usually sent in the DIN long and long plus, C6, C5 and DIN C6/5 formats.
How does correct storage work? There is hardly anything less complicated than storing paper envelopes and mailing envelopes. You should prevent soiling and yellowing. Dirty or discolored envelopes are no good. The following applies to maintaining the adhesive effect of self-adhesive envelopes: Direct sunlight is harmful. Damp storage rooms are unsuitable. Years of storage due to excessive stockpiling should be avoided. A clever stacking technique is helpful.
