The manufacturing process of packaging film is a technically demanding task. The raw materials for film packaging are processed by extrusion. This means that the raw plastics are melted by means of heating and internal friction, homogenized and then mixed with curable additives appropriate to the product in question. The material obtained in this way is pressed through round nozzles in a continuous process, whereby the end product is initially produced in continuous webs. In order for the flow to succeed in the nozzle, the so-called extruder builds up the necessary pressure. After the plastic has exited the nozzle, it hardens. Later, it is cut into suitable pieces. This produces webs of packaging film of any length. Conveniently, these are usually produced as packaging film rolls. For this purpose, the webs are pulled onto a cardboard roll. This facilitates subsequent handling and ensures a high degree of efficiency in use.

Subsequently, finishing techniques are possible, which include surface treatment processes, increasing film transparency and determining film thickness. As a result, the packaging film end products have different properties, such as film thickness, tear strength, stretchability and waterproofness.

Politicians as well as companies and associations from the plastic packaging industry are making efforts to improve the reusability and recyclability of packaging films. For example, in addition to an EU regulation stating that 55% of all plastic packaging should be recyclable by 2030, there is also a corresponding voluntary commitment by the German plastic packaging industry. Because such packaging is made of several types of materials glued together, it is difficult for sorting equipment to separate them correctly. In addition, it is not possible to mix the materials well together, resulting in a low-quality recycled product.

How to properly dispose of film packaging and what to consider in the recycling process

Targeted recycling of packaging film provides high-quality secondary raw materials for new plastic packaging. If materials made of plastic are reused and recycled, this contributes to waste prevention and lower consumption of fossil raw materials, because the recycling process has less impact on the environment than the production of new plastics.

However, the fact that film packaging is made of PE is not quite enough to make it suitable for recycling. Packaging is only recyclable if it is free of any impurities. For example, plastic waste that is covered with greasy food residues that are difficult to wash off is not considered recyclable. This is because there is a risk of bacteria developing in the packaging or it attracting vermin. Many processors also reject packaging film that has a strong odor (e.g. fish packaging), even if it does not contain food residues.
