This shipping carton is made of corrugated cardboard. This material owes its name to the corrugated structures inside it. It is produced by means of a so-called corrugator. The raw material is paper several kilometers long, which has been rolled up beforehand. During the manufacturing process, the corrugator continuously unrolls paper from the roll and processes it accordingly.
Inside the plant, two corrugating rolls arranged one above the other rotate. These owe their name to the fact that they have cross grooves stamped on them. The corrugating rolls rotate continuously and mesh with each other like two toothed wheels. When the paper is moved between the two rollers, it is given a wavy shape. Glue is then used to glue a layer of smooth paper onto it from one or two sides.
The resulting product can already be considered a finished corrugated board. However, to give it even more stability, a second layer of corrugated and smooth paper is often glued on top. Depending on the number of layers, the result is called single wall or double wall.
In the so-called drying line, the corrugated board is dried under the influence of pressure and heat.

The history of corrugated board

Corrugated paper was patented in England as early as 1856. At that time, however, it was still used as an insert for high hats. It was not until 1871 that Albert Jones of New York patented corrugated paper, which was used for packaging purposes. The primary purpose was to be able to package bottles and vials in such a way that they could be shipped without difficulty.
Corrugated board in its current form was first produced by the American Oliver Long. He glued the corrugated paper developed by Jones to smooth paper. Long received the corresponding patent for this in 1874. However, his product only had smooth paper glued to one side.
Corrugated board glued on both sides was first patented by Robert H. Thompson in 1882. Thompson & Norris, which had already been founded in 1875, bought Jones and Long's patents and developed a process for the industrial production of corrugated board. The first continental European manufacturing plant opened in Jülich in the Rhineland in 1886.
The first German company to produce corrugated board was established in 1892, founded by the German entrepreneur Fedor Schoen. Production initially took place in Breslau, but was relocated to Cologne, not far from Jülich, in 1894. Corrugated board is still produced there today.

In Germany, corrugated board is used to package around two thirds of all goods. In 2020, 42 companies were active in this sector. Production took place in 124 plants and 104 facilities. Sales in that year amounted to around 5.7 billion euros.
Currently, around 81% is produced on the basis of recycled paper. This makes the material particularly sustainable. So if you buy the 60x40x40 box, you are making a conscious decision in favor of an environmentally friendly packaging solution.

Why the 60x40 package is double wall and how it protects your goods

The 60x40x40 cm shipping carton is manufactured according to FEFCO code 0201. FEFCO stands for "Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondule", in German "Europäische Vereinigung der Wellpapphersteller". This non-profit organization, based in Brussels, Belgium, sees itself as representing the interests of the corrugated board industry. In this capacity, it has developed a code system which is now used worldwide.
The basic principle of this system is to divide all cartons into different basic types. For this purpose, a two-digit code is assigned to each type. In the case of folding cartons, this code is 02. In total, the FEFCO code has four digits. While the first two digits serve to define the basic type of a particular carton, the third and fourth are intended to describe it in more detail: FEFCO 0201, for example, stands for a folding carton with bottom inner flaps and lid inner flaps as well as center butted bottom outer flaps and center butted lid outer flaps. Among the packaging means, products of this type represent the most frequently encountered.

The dimensions of the carton 60x40x40 cm

The external dimensions of this carton are 600 millimeters long, 400 millimeters high and 400 millimeters wide. You could also say 60x40x40 cm or 600x400x400 mm. The inside dimensions are 595 millimeters long, 395 millimeters high and 390 millimeters wide. This could be used to transport many small and medium-sized items, if this packaging measures 60x40x40 cm, for example, as a moving box.

Hermes M parcel it may be a maximum of 80 cm, and in the case of a Hermes L parcel a maximum of 120 cm. Consequently, the L parcel would be the right choice to send the box 600x400x400 mm. The maximum weight is basically 25 kg.
Another factor is the respective country of delivery. Currently, Hermes delivers to more than 140 countries, whereby the shipping costs vary greatly in some cases.
With regard to the shipping method, a distinction is made between delivery to one of the Hermes parcel stores, door-to-door delivery and parcel pick-up.Customers of Hermes, but also those of the Otto Group or Amazon, can hand in and receive parcels in the corresponding parcel stores. There are currently over 16,000 branches of this type in Germany. They are often located in gas stations, kiosks or dry cleaners.
Increasingly, delivery is carried out by subcontractors. In such cases, private delivery vehicles are often used.

If DHL is used as the parcel service, both the dimensions and the weight play a role. If the weight is 2 kg and the dimensions are 60x30x15 cm, it is a Paket-S, at 5 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket-M, at 10 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket-L and at 31.5 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket XL, whereby these values represent the respective upper limit.

When shipping a parcel with GLS, it depends on its dimensions: The length of the longest side and that of the shortest are added together. The sum is decisive for whether it is a GLS parcel XS, S, M, L or XL. For it to be a parcel L, the maximum length is 90 cm. For a parcel XL, up to 300 cm or 3 m are allowed. With GLS parcels can also be sent abroad. In this regard, most deliveries go to Austria, France, Spain and Italy. On the other hand, it should be clear to us that it is often the supposedly completely mundane things that have made our world what it is. They are the silent helpers in the background, which nevertheless create essential basic conditions.
