Both in shipping and storage processes, no company can avoid using cardboard boxes as stable and safe packaging for their goods. However, cardboard packaging is also suitable for private use. The cuboid cardboard box 60x40x40 is a very popular outer packaging, which is large enough to pack many different items up to a length of 60 cm. The dimensions of the carton are also very convenient for storage and allow space-saving organization. The fact that such boxes are loadable and spacious is another plus. Depending on how it is used, the cardboard box can withstand a load of about 20 kg.
This shipping carton is made of corrugated cardboard. This material owes its name to the corrugated structures inside it. It is produced by means of a so-called corrugator. The raw material is paper several kilometers long, which has been rolled up beforehand. During the manufacturing process, the corrugator continuously unrolls paper from the roll and processes it accordingly.
Inside the plant, two corrugating rolls arranged one above the other rotate. These owe their name to the fact that they have cross grooves stamped on them. The corrugating rolls rotate continuously and mesh with each other like two toothed wheels. When the paper is moved between the two rollers, it is given a wavy shape. Glue is then used to glue a layer of smooth paper onto it from one or two sides.
The resulting product can already be considered a finished corrugated board. However, to give it even more stability, a second layer of corrugated and smooth paper is often glued on top. Depending on the number of layers, the result is called single wall or double wall.
In the so-called drying line, the corrugated board is dried under the influence of pressure and heat.
The material is then cut to size and squeezed together at certain points. There it should be possible to bend it later. Corrugated board ensures that boxes 60x40x40 cm are particularly robust and safe.
The history of corrugated board
Corrugated paper was patented in England as early as 1856. At that time, however, it was still used as an insert for high hats. It was not until 1871 that Albert Jones of New York patented corrugated paper, which was used for packaging purposes. The primary purpose was to be able to package bottles and vials in such a way that they could be shipped without difficulty.
Corrugated board in its current form was first produced by the American Oliver Long. He glued the corrugated paper developed by Jones to smooth paper. Long received the corresponding patent for this in 1874. However, his product only had smooth paper glued to one side.
Corrugated board glued on both sides was first patented by Robert H. Thompson in 1882. Thompson & Norris, which had already been founded in 1875, bought Jones and Long's patents and developed a process for the industrial production of corrugated board. The first continental European manufacturing plant opened in Jülich in the Rhineland in 1886.
The first German company to produce corrugated board was established in 1892, founded by the German entrepreneur Fedor Schoen. Production initially took place in Breslau, but was relocated to Cologne, not far from Jülich, in 1894. Corrugated board is still produced there today.
In Germany, corrugated board is used to package around two thirds of all goods. In 2020, 42 companies were active in this sector. Production took place in 124 plants and 104 facilities. Sales in that year amounted to around 5.7 billion euros.
Currently, around 81% is produced on the basis of recycled paper. This makes the material particularly sustainable. So if you buy the 60x40x40 box, you are making a conscious decision in favor of an environmentally friendly packaging solution.
The corrugation within the cardboard used here is a so-called B-corrugation. This is used to classify its shape. Often the B-corrugation is also called fine corrugation. It has a height of 2.2 to 3.1 millimeters and a span of 4.8 to 6.5 millimeters.
The BC flute is often used for double-wall cardboard packaging. In this case, the corrugation within one layer is a B-corrugation and that within the other layer is a C-corrugation. In the latter, the corrugation height is 3.1 to 4.0 millimeters and the corrugation span is 6.5 to 7.9 millimeters. In single flute condition, cartons 60x40x40 cm have a net weight of 734 g.
H2: The shipping carton 60 x 40 x 40 is manufactured according to FEFCO type 0201 for cartons.
The 60x40x40 cm shipping carton is manufactured according to FEFCO code 0201. FEFCO stands for "Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondule", in German "Europäische Vereinigung der Wellpapphersteller". This non-profit organization, based in Brussels, Belgium, sees itself as representing the interests of the corrugated board industry. In this capacity, it has developed a code system which is now used worldwide.
The basic principle of this system is to divide all cartons into different basic types. For this purpose, a two-digit code is assigned to each type. In the case of folding cartons, this code is 02. In total, the FEFCO code has four digits. While the first two digits serve to define the basic type of a particular carton, the third and fourth are intended to describe it in more detail: FEFCO 0201, for example, stands for a folding carton with bottom inner flaps and lid inner flaps as well as center butted bottom outer flaps and center butted lid outer flaps. Among the packaging means, products of this type represent the most frequently encountered.
The dimensions of the carton 60x40x40 cm
The external dimensions of this carton are 600 millimeters long, 400 millimeters high and 400 millimeters wide. You could also say 60x40x40 cm or 600x400x400 mm. The inside dimensions are 595 millimeters long, 395 millimeters high and 390 millimeters wide. This could be used to transport many small and medium-sized items, if this packaging measures 60x40x40 cm, for example, as a moving box.
H2: Use the cardboard box 600x400x400 mm as a sturdy moving box and load it up to a weight of 20 kg.
Available cardboard box 600x400x400 double wall or single wall and in the colors brown or white. This also affects the price: Due to the higher material consumption, the double wall version is slightly more costly. The minimum order quantity in both cases is ten. However, it should be noted that the more boxes you buy, the lower the unit price. The shipping carton 60x40x40 cm can be loaded with a weight of up to 20 kg. Thereby it is ideal as a moving box 60x40x40 cm because of its size and its load capacity.
As mentioned, the maximum load capacity is 20 kg. This makes it possible to store, for example, four small items (up to 5 kg) in the cardboard box 600x400x400 mm. Alternatively, it can be filled with fewer but heavier goods. Moreover, thanks to its dimensions, this folding carton can be stacked without any problems, which makes it ideal for transporting and shipping items as well as for use as a storage carton. If moving boxes are 60x40x40 cm in size, a lot can be stored in them. Especially when moving, it is important to plan well and not waste space. Whether clothes, electrical appliances, books, smaller decorative objects or dishes - in moving boxes 600x400x400 mm everything finds its place and is safe from damage and dirt.
When it comes to using it as shipping packaging, the different conditions of the respective parcel services must be taken into account.
With Hermes, the length of the longest side of the box used must be added to the length of the shortest side. The shipping costs depend on the sum of both. In this specific case, the result is 1,000 mm or 100 cm. In the case of a
Hermes M parcel it may be a maximum of 80 cm, and in the case of a Hermes L parcel a maximum of 120 cm. Consequently, the L parcel would be the right choice to send the box 600x400x400 mm. The maximum weight is basically 25 kg.
Another factor is the respective country of delivery. Currently, Hermes delivers to more than 140 countries, whereby the shipping costs vary greatly in some cases.
With regard to the shipping method, a distinction is made between delivery to one of the Hermes parcel stores, door-to-door delivery and parcel pick-up.Customers of Hermes, but also those of the Otto Group or Amazon, can hand in and receive parcels in the corresponding parcel stores. There are currently over 16,000 branches of this type in Germany. They are often located in gas stations, kiosks or dry cleaners.
Increasingly, delivery is carried out by subcontractors. In such cases, private delivery vehicles are often used.
If DHL is used as the parcel service, both the dimensions and the weight play a role. If the weight is 2 kg and the dimensions are 60x30x15 cm, it is a Paket-S, at 5 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket-M, at 10 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket-L and at 31.5 kg and dimensions of 120x60x60 cm it is a Paket XL, whereby these values represent the respective upper limit.
If you use a 60x40x40 box, it will therefore usually be a DHL Paket M. In the case of particularly heavy content, however, it can also be a package L or even XL.
With regard to the shipping method, a distinction is made between standard shipping and express shipping. While the standard variant within Germany usually takes one to two working days, a DHL box 60x40x40 cm sent by express method often reaches the recipient the very next day.
As for other delivery countries, DHL divides the world into a total of eight different zones, each with its own conditions: Zone 1 represents the European Union, with Germany excluded from the German perspective because in this case it would be a domestic shipment. Switzerland and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland form Zone 2. All other European states are Zone 3. Russia represents Zone 4 and the United States of America Zone 5. The countries of North Africa, the Middle East and some of the rest of Asia, together with Canada, make up Zone 6. China is Zone 7 and the entire rest of the world is Zone 8. From zone to zone, shipping costs sometimes vary greatly.
In Germany, DHL has 36 parcel centers. In cooperation with Deutsche Post, the Group also operates around 2,300 sales points, around 10,000 Packstations, around 10,500 parcel stores, around 13,000 post offices and around 26,000 service points, ensuring that the 60x40 cm box reaches you as quickly as possible.
If you want to use DPD, you also have to add the length of the longest side of the respective parcel with the length of the shortest side, because the sum of both decides whether it is a parcel XS, S, M, L or XL. In case of a package L the upper limit is 90 cm, in case of a package XL it is 300 cm or 3 m. Because in the case of a parcel 60x40x40 cm the total is 100 cm or 1 m, it is a DPD parcel XL.
Regarding the shipping method, there are three different options: The first is to drop off your parcel at a DPD parcel store and have it delivered directly to the address in question. Alternatively, it can be delivered from there to another parcel store. It is also possible to collect the parcel in question directly from the sender's address and then have it delivered.
Private senders can send their parcels, including the 60x40x40 cm box, to any country in the European Union with DPD. Business customers also have the option of worldwide shipping.
Every year DPD Germany transports around 375 million parcels, around a third of which go to private recipients. Within Germany, there are a total of 79 parcel sorting centers and around 7,500 parcel stores. DPD Germany employs around 9,500 staff. A further 11,000 people are employed in the delivery area.
In 2011, DPD was the first parcel service provider in Germany to establish advance notice for relevant parcels. The day before, recipients were notified of the delivery of their parcel and informed of the delivery time within a three-hour time window. There was also the option of postponing the delivery to another day. Since then, the number of options has gradually grown. For example, it is now also possible to redirect your parcel to a DPD parcel store. In addition, the time window for delivery has now been reduced to one hour. In addition, you can follow the delivery in detail using live tracking.
When shipping a parcel with GLS, it depends on its dimensions: The length of the longest side and that of the shortest are added together. The sum is decisive for whether it is a GLS parcel XS, S, M, L or XL. For it to be a parcel L, the maximum length is 90 cm. For a parcel XL, up to 300 cm or 3 m are allowed. Because for parcels 60x40x40 cm the two sides add up to 100 cm, a parcel 60x40x40 cm is a GLS Paket XL.
With GLS parcels can also be sent abroad. In this regard, most deliveries go to Austria, France, Spain and Italy. Although all four countries are part of the European Union, the shipping costs differ to some extent: Sending a Parcel-XL from Germany to Austria, France or Spain currently costs around 25 euros, while a delivery to Italy costs around 30 euros.
That's why packaging is so important
Especially in times of flourishing online trade, boxes made of corrugated board are omnipresent. They ensure that everything you order arrives undamaged. Even the most delicate items can travel the greatest distances without suffering the slightest damage. Packaging of this kind achieves all of this and also has an excellent ecological balance sheet.
Nevertheless, most people take them for granted and pay no attention to them. On the one hand, this is understandable, since we are usually less interested in the packaging than in what it conceals. On the other hand, it should be clear to us that it is often the supposedly completely mundane things that have made our world what it is. They are the silent helpers in the background, which nevertheless create essential basic conditions. Cartons made of corrugated board and, as a special case, the shipping carton 60x40x40 cm, represent an example of this.
