Differentiation between parcel M and consignment up to 2 kg: The differentiation between the two shipping classes lies in the insurance of the shipment. Only in the case of the parcel tariff is the shipment insured up to € 500, although identical weight specifications apply in both shipping classes. Parcel shipping class M up to 2 kg and up to 60x30x15 cm without tracking and liability costs €4.79. For parcels of the same class, shipping including tracking and liability up to €500 costs €5.49.

For all other parcels, which incidentally all have the maximum dimensions of 120x60x60 cm, liability up to €500 and tracking is included in any case. Shipments of class L up to 5 kg are charged at € 6.99, shipments up to 10 kg at € 9.49. Parcels in shipping class XL up to 31.5 kg are charged €16.49.

How to send mail safely in parcel boxes

To ensure that goods reach the recipient safely, parcels should be packed correctly and efficiently. This includes choosing the right box in the optimal size, as well as other considerations such as secure sealing.

First and foremost, the right packaging should be chosen. At best, this consists of a stable shipping carton with a thickness of at least 4 to 5 millimetres and a visible corrugated structure made of corrugated board. This protects the contents from the effects of pressure. The strength and robustness of the cardboard depends on the weight of the goods to be shipped. One of the smallest possible sizes should always be chosen, in which the contents fit well and there is still about 5 cm of space left for padding. It is possible to use a used shipping box several times. However, it should be undamaged and show no signs of use that would affect its stability. Newer boxes absorb shocks and pressure better than old ones because their air spaces are more intact. The air spaces in the corrugated board act as shock absorbers and cushion pressures and impacts from the outside. During shipping, the parcels are exposed to high loads, for example from conveyors and slides.

Heavy items should be packed downwards and light items upwards in the parcel packaging. The weight should be evenly distributed within the shipping box. The goods should also be packed as compactly as possible so that they cannot slide back and forth inside the parcel. Fragile or sensitive goods should be placed in the middle of the parcel and never against the side walls to avoid damage from external influences.

When shipping products with a liquid or creamy consistency, it is advisable to not only buy the parcel box but also to immediately think of an airtight bag and seal it so that they do not cause any damage should they leak. Other products may also need special packaging: Bottles, for example, should stand upright so they can withstand impact and pressure.

Cushioning material should be used to ensure optimal protection. The padding fixes the products in place and cushions external stresses such as impacts. Once the packaging is in place, the cardboard must be taped shut. To prevent it from opening, the cardboard slits should be sealed with high-quality adhesive tape. The packing tape additionally strengthens the cardboard of the package and increases the transport safety of the package. The tape should be as tear-resistant as possible and have a strong adhesive force. To seal it, stick it evenly around the seams and flaps of the box. The heavier the shipment, the more adhesive material should be used. If possible, twine or parcel string should not be used because they can get caught in the conveyor system of the parcel sorting centre. This could damage the machine sorting the parcel.
