Buy the 80x60x40 carton and use it as a stable and postage optimized storage and shipping carton

Individuals and businesses need sturdy cartons for storing goods or shipping them. Depending on the purpose, products of different designs and cardboard boxes are suitable for this purpose. More often used is the cuboid cardboard box 80x60x40 cm or similar cardboard box dimensions, such as the square box 60x60x60 cm. These are postage-optimized dimensions for use as shipping cartons, which can be easily sent with common shipping service providers. It also makes sense to use them as long-term storage cartons, as such large capacity cartons are roomy and loadable. Depending on their use, they can withstand a load of up to 40 kg. So a carton 800x600 mm is not only large, but also sturdy and reliable.

The exact size of the folding cartons depends on the manufacturer

The exact dimensions of the shipping cartons differ depending on the manufacturer. For example, some offer 800x600x400 mm as the inner dimension from the carton, while the outer dimension is 807x607x413 mm. In this case, the cardboard has a thickness of about 7 mm. Sometimes thinner material is used for the boxes. Other manufacturers use the dimensions 800x600x400 mm as external dimensions, while the internal dimensions are, for example, 790 x 590 x 380 mm. So here the material used is wider to allow even better stability. Both are well suited for use for storage or transportation. Cartons with similar dimensions such as 600x600x600 mm are also available. Likewise, the offer includes many more items where the carton is 80cm wide - or even larger, depending on individual needs.
Cartons of this size are usually a folding carton of FEFCO 0201 standard, which are particularly flexible in their design. Another advantage of this type of carton is that it is delivered in a space-saving way and is unfolded only later. Afterwards, the user closes it with parcel tape. The box 800x600 mm is usually made of double wall brown corrugated cardboard with a BC flute, which makes it highly stable.

Corrugated board provides stability with low dead weight

Corrugated board consists of several layers of cardboard. In the simplest case, these layers include the outer and inner covers, which are connected with a corrugated layer. If the corrugated cardboard is multi-corrugated, there are also one or more intermediate blankets.
Between the flute and the blankets there are cavities. These ensure that the cardboard 80x60x40 does not become too heavy. This is helpful when shipping, as many service providers set a maximum weight for their shipping methods. The voids also help to insulate the interior. This means goods that are sensitive to light, heat or cold are better protected. Dirt and moisture are also less likely to penetrate the interior than with other shipping packaging because they have to overcome multiple levels.
The structure of corrugated board provides stability. Its structure distributes the pressure exerted on the package by the goods inside or forces from outside evenly over the cardboard. It is less easily punctured than packaging with a different structure. This is why corrugated cardboard boxes are particularly suitable for shipping goods, whether they are robust or fragile. So even a glass sculpture could be shipped in a box 80x60x40 cm made of corrugated board.

Different types of corrugated cardboard are optimized for storage or shipping

With DIN standard 55468, the Verband der Wellpappen-Industrie e.V. (Association of the Corrugated Board Industry) defined three criteria for corrugated board: burst strength, puncture resistance and edge crush resistance. How high these values must be depends in each case on which flute type they use. Each type of corrugation is further divided into subcategories based on its quality, which have different values for the three criteria.
The paperboard used for a product is relevant because, for example, a storage carton and a shipping carton have different requirements for burst strength, puncture resistance and edge crush resistance. For some grades, for example, burst strength can be neglected because cartons used to store goods only need to withstand storage stress. In this case, the stacking crush resistance is more important.
If, on the other hand, the folding cartons are to be shipped, the load acting on them is higher. In this case, for example, a shipping carton 80x60x40 cm made of double-wall or triple-wall corrugated board should be used. These can withstand the load without any problems, provided that the load capacity of up to 40 kg is not exceeded. For particularly high loads during shipping, double-wall heavy-duty corrugated board can also be used.

The folding carton 800x600x400 mm is double corrugated and uses the stable BC corrugation

Most FEFCO 0201 folding cartons are made of double wall corrugated board with a BC flute. In this one, there is a B-flute, an intermediate flute and a C-flute between the outer and inner flutes of cardboard. The B flute has a height of 2.2 mm to 3.1 mm and is also known as the fine flute, while the C flute, which is called the intermediate flute, measures between 3.1 mm and 4.0 mm. The intermediate paperboard layer provides rigidity and improves the puncture resistance of the packaging. Only the interaction of these five layers gives the folding carton the necessary stability to allow the high load capacity of up to 40 kg.
In addition to the type of flute used in the double flute segment, the paper quality of the blankets and flutes is also crucial for stability. Here, manufacturers rely either on kraftliner or testliner for the covers and on semi-chemical pulp or Schrenzpapier for the corrugations. Another important contribution to the robustness of the shipping carton 80x60x40 cm is its construction, which in this case follows the FEFCO 0201 standard.

Carton shapes are standardized by the European Association of Corrugated Board Manufacturers

Like the corrugated types, cardboard constructions are also standardized. The European Association of Corrugated Board Manufacturers is responsible for these specifications. As this non-profit organization was originally known under the French name Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondule, the standards set by it are also referred to as the FEFCO Code, which is described in more detail in the so-called FEFCO Catalog.
In the course of history, the European Solid Board Organization also participated in the creation of the catalog. Since this is officially called the European Solid Board Organization, it is often referred to as the FEFCO-ESBO code.
The code and the associated catalog have led to the standardization of what was originally very different packaging. Today, it is regarded as the worldwide standard for the production of shipping packaging made of corrugated board and solid board. This means that customers and manufacturers always know exactly what the standard packaging is made of. This means that the 80x60x40 cm shipping carton also has a FEFCO code.

The FEFCO catalog is the standard for the production of cardboard packaging

The basic code consists of four digits. The first two indicate the general design of a carton, the two behind specify it. Today, the FEFCO catalog recognizes around 200 types of such shipping cartons. These include variations and mixed forms of coded cartons. For these, the four-digit code is extended. For variations, the FEFCO ESBO code is followed by a digit separated by a hyphen. The catalog designates mixed forms with the codes of the basic forms and separates them with a slash.
Each code in the catalog is accompanied by a unique drawing of the construction. According to this, manufacturers produce the boxes. The technical drawing includes symbols for important elements that must be considered during production, such as slots, tabs, punching, creasing or cutting. These are necessary so that the finished cardboard box can be folded.

FEFCO 02 cartonboard grades are especially popular for shipping

Shipping packages whose FEFCO code begins with 02 are folding cartons or folding boxes made of one piece of corrugated cardboard. The closure of the factory edge of this piece is done by wire stitching, flap gluing with hot glue, taping by gluing with soda tape or similar.
The folding boxes of this type of construction bring some advantages: for example, they save space in the customer's warehouse, as they are delivered flat. Only after receiving them, the customer unfolds them and closes them with the flaps, of which there are usually four for the lid and bottom. The closure of these cover flaps can be relatively variable: Wire stitching, adhesive strips or other gluing, strapping or strapping are possible.
There are many variants of FEFCO 02 boxes. For example, solid board or corrugated board can be used as the material of the box, and single-flute or multi-flute forms are possible. The size can be adjusted variably, so that the boxes can be used in many industries. The carton 800x600x400 mm is mainly made of corrugated board and can be shipped by DHL, Hermes or other common shipping service providers.

FEFCO 0201 folding cartons have a good price/performance ratio

One of the best known packages, which is also the most frequently used, is the FEFCO 02 subtype FEFCO 0201. This folding box has bottom and lid inner flaps, as well as centrally abutting bottom and lid outer flaps. The latter are used for closing the crate by the customer simply connecting them with parcel tape or a similar tool.
The material required for this design is relatively small. However, this does not affect the protective effect for the goods inside the box. For this reason, the price/performance ratio of the folding carton can be classified as particularly favorable.
The dead weight of FEFCO 0201 boxes is also low due to the cavities between the tops and corrugations and the thin layers. This has a positive effect on the shipment of heavy items.
The boxes can be made of single or multi-layer corrugated cardboard. In the case of the folding carton 800x600x400 mm with double-wall BC flute, the protective performance is particularly high. For this reason, the folding cartons are even suitable for shipping or storing fragile goods.

A 800x600 mm folding box can be used to ship heavy and bulky goods up to 80cm in size

A FEFCO 0201 folding box is easy to assemble and strong enough to ship even heavy goods. The only thing to keep in mind is that the load capacity of up to 40 kg only applies to an evenly distributed load. The cardboard box would not withstand a punctual load of this magnitude.
The 800x600x400 mm carton is thus suitable for shipping bulky goods. However, it should, as far as possible, be uniformly loaded and not contain items that press on only one particular spot. This is especially important in the middle area of the lid flaps. Since the inner flaps of the lid and base do not meet, the strength of the carton is lowest in the resulting gap. If the box is not properly glued here, it could be dented.
If you want to ship heavy items in the folding cartons that reach the maximum load of 40 kg, you should secure the package particularly strongly. For example, in this case, instead of or in addition to simple tape, strapping tape should be used to seal the shipping box. These consist of a wide variety of materials and can thus be selected optimally for the intended purpose. If the packages are to be stored in stacks before or after shipping, strapping tape can also serve as an aid to secure the stacks. So the shipping carton 80x60x40 cm is ideal for logistic use.

The cartons 80 x 60 x 40 are optimized for shipping with DHL and other common service providers

The carton 80x60x40 cm is optimized for the shipping classes of common service providers, which determine the maximum size and weight limit of a package.
With the shipping service provider DHL, such a parcel can be sent under the name DHL Paket M, provided that the cardboard box including the contents does not exceed the permissible weight up to 5 kg. For this type of parcel, the shipping boxes must not be larger than 120x60x60 cm. DHL also offers two other shipping methods for parcels of these sizes, for which the maximum permissible weight is 10 kg and 31.5 kg respectively.
The shipping service providers Hermes and GLS divide the size limit for parcels according to the sum of the longest and shortest side. For the 800x600x400 mm folding box, this value is 120 cm. Accordingly, the parcel can be sent as Hermes XL parcel and GLS parcel XL. For Hermes, the maximum size allowed is 150 cm long and the weight is 31.5 kg. GLS allows parcels with a length sum of up to 300 cm with this shipping method.
The provider DPD divides the parcels according to the so-called girth, which results from the calculation of (height + width) x 2 + length of the package in centimeters. For an 80x60x40 DHL Parcel M, this value would thus be 280. This falls under the DPD Parcel XL shipping method, where the maximum girth dimension is 300 cm.

The folding boxes help to protect the environment

The recipient of a FEFCO 0201 box can subsequently reuse it due to its long shelf life, for example to store the goods received. It can also be reused as a transport box. This extends the life of the boxes, further improving their already small environmental footprint.
The cardboard that makes up the 800x600x400 mm box is also fully recyclable. In fact, corrugated cardboard itself often consists largely of recycled paper. During production, only some virgin fibers are added to guarantee long-term stability. This process can be repeated up to five times. If it can no longer be recycled, the corrugated board is biodegradable.
